LAS 6
How to use the LAS 6.
If you don’t know what datasets are available at the APDRC, there are several ways to discovery data. They are described in How to search for data.
Select
a dataset on a LAS 6 page:
If for example, you wish to access NLOM Nowcast sea surface height data on the public server, you would select public then "Assimilated Model Output" followed by "NRL NLOM 1/16deg Nowcast". The URL bar will look like this:
Select SSH:
- Select SSH and Click Next >
This first example shows how to make a XY plot. Select the geography region and times of interest:
- Default options:
- Select view: Longitude-Latitude map (xy)
- Select output: Color plot
- Select region: Full Region
- Lon-Lat: Using 2 points click
on the map
- 1st time click selects the top-left corner with a cross.
- 2nd time click selects the bottom-right corner with a yellow box.
- 3rd time click resets the point click back to 1st time click function
- selects top-left corner with a cross.
- Lon-Lat: Using type:

It will automatically change to:
24.0 N
165.0 W 153.0 W

- Select time: 03 Oct 2004
- Click Next >
- It will plot the graph in a new window.
This next example shows how to download a NetCDF file. Please be aware of the size of the resulting NetCDF file. You may have to make several files divided in time or space. Select the geography region and times of interest:
- Select the options:
- Select view: xyt volume
- Select output: NetCDF file
- Select region: Full Region
- Lon-Lat: Using 2 points click
on the map
- 1st time click selects the top-left corner with a cross.
- 2nd time click selects the bottom-right corner with a yellow box.
- 3rd time click resets the point click back to 1st time click function
- selects top-left corner with a cross.
- Lon-Lat: Using type:

- Press "GO"
- Select time range: 01 Oct 2004
31 Oct 2004
- Click Next >
- It will show [Link to your netCDF file] download page
- Click "Your netCDF file" to download the NetCDF file (*.nc)
The following example shows how to make time plot for a station dataset. Select 1 station in the dataset UH Sea Level daily:
- Select the HONOLULU, U.S.A. Hawaii and click Next >
- Default options:
- Select view: t line
- Select output: Line plot
- Select region: Full Region
- Default time range: 01 Jan 1985
31 Dec 2012
- Click Next >
- A time series plot will appear in a new window. The time axis will adjust based on data availability.
