" DOC_040: "Comment : This gauge is in English Bay, Ascension and is " DOC_041: " not to be confused with Phase 1 pressure sensor " DOC_042: " which was in Clarence Bay. " DOC_043: " " DOC_044: " This station is part of Phase 2 of the ACCLAIM " DOC_045: " project. The ACCLAIM (Antarctic Circumpolar " DOC_046: " Current Levels by Altimetry and Island " DOC_047: " Measurements) programme in the South Atlantic and " DOC_048: " Southern Oceans consists of measurements from " DOC_049: " coastal tide gauges and bottom pressure stations, " DOC_050: " together with an ongoing research programme in " DOC_051: " satellite altimetry. ACCLAIM is the Proudman " DOC_052: " Oceanographic Laboratory's main contribution to " DOC_053: " WOCE (and, in particular, to WOCE Core 2) and one " DOC_054: " of its objectives is the study of variations of " DOC_055: " the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. ACCLAIM is " DOC_056: " managed within the Global Sea Level Change (GSLC) " DOC_057: " group at POL led by Dr.J.M.Vassie. " DOC_058: " " DOC_059: " The history of the development of ACCLAIM is " DOC_060: " described in the report by Spencer et al. (1993): " DOC_061: " " DOC_062: " Spencer, R., Foden, P.R., McGarry, C., Harrison, " DOC_063: " A.J., Vassie, J.M., Baker, T.F., Smithson, " DOC_064: " M.J., Harangozo, S.A. and Woodworth, P.L. 1993. " DOC_065: " The ACCLAIM programme in the South Atlantic and " DOC_066: " Southern Oceans. International Hydrographic " DOC_067: " Review, 70, 7-21. " DOC_068: " " DOC_069: " In that report it will be seen that, in Phase 1 of " DOC_070: " ACCLAIM from 1983, measurements at coastal tide " DOC_071: " gauge sites took the form of sub-surface pressure " DOC_072: " (SSP) measurements (units of pressure e.g. mbar) " DOC_073: " rather than sea level (units of length e.g. " DOC_074: " centimetres). SSP is here defined as the total, " DOC_075: " measured pressure recorded by a sub-surface " DOC_076: " pressure transducer, a measurement which includes " DOC_077: " the pressure load from the atmosphere as well as " DOC_078: " from the water column. It is absolutely essential " DOC_079: " that any user of ACCLAIM data realises which data " DOC_080: " type (either SSP or sea level) is being analysed. " DOC_081: " " DOC_082: " From around early 1993, the gauges at many of the " DOC_083: " sites were replaced by Phase 2 ACCLAIM 'B gauges' " DOC_084: " which record SSP, air pressure and sea level as " DOC_085: " described in: " DOC_086: " " DOC_087: " Woodworth, P.L., Vassie, J.M., Spencer, R. and " DOC_088: " Smith, D.E. 1994. Precise datum control for " DOC_089: " pressure tide gauges. To be published in Marine " DOC_090: " Geodesy. " DOC_091: " " DOC_092: " The Phase 1 coastal SSP data were acquired in " DOC_093: " different ways (e.g. with a diver-replaced " DOC_094: " Aanderaa pressure gauge at Ascension, or with a " DOC_095: " Digiquartz in the sea sensor at St.Helena, " DOC_096: " see Spencer et al. 1993 for details) and with " DOC_097: " different pressure integration periods (e.g. " DOC_098: " quarter hour, half hour, one hour). For WOCE Centre " DOC_099: " purposes the original data have generally been " DOC_100: " filtered to give one hour sampling. However, " DOC_101: " common to all records is an uncertainty connected " DOC_102: " with potential offset biases and drifts in the " DOC_103: " pressure sensors. At some sites (e.g. St.Helena) " DOC_104: " extensive tide pole data are also available and " DOC_105: " biases and long term drifts in the sensor data " DOC_106: " may eventually be rectified (this is under study " DOC_107: " at present). However, the drifts in general mean " DOC_108: " that in most cases the records should not be used, " DOC_109: " without further careful attention in particular " DOC_110: " studies, for the study of timescales seasonal or " DOC_111: " longer. " DOC_112: " " DOC_113: " The Phase 2 coastal sea level data have precise " DOC_114: " datum control (see Woodworth et al. 1994 for " DOC_115: " details) and can certainly be used for long " DOC_116: " term studies. These data have also been contributed " DOC_117: " to the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) " DOC_118: " and Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS). " DOC_119: " " DOC_120: " Some of the Phase 1 data and all the Phase 2 " DOC_121: " coastal data will also contain ancillary " DOC_122: " information on air pressures and sea temperatures " DOC_123: " from ACCLAIM sensors. Several of these records " DOC_124: " contain large gaps. However, the GSLC group at POL " DOC_125: " has collected extensive sets of such ancillary " DOC_126: " data from meteorological agencies for its own " DOC_127: " analysis purposes, and should be able to provide " DOC_128: " further advice. " DOC_129: " " DOC_130: " SSP measurements at deep ocean bottom pressure " DOC_131: " stations (together with inverted echo sounder and " DOC_132: " temperature measurements) have also been a " DOC_133: " feature of ACCLAIM. Measurements at Amsterdam and " DOC_134: " Kerguelen in the Indian Ocean are described in: " DOC_135: " " DOC_136: " Vassie, J.M., Harrison, A.J., Woodworth, " DOC_137: " P.L., Harangozo, S.A., Smithson, M.J. and " DOC_138: " Thompson, S.R. 1994.
