The following table sum-up the available mean wind fields for each scatterometer and at each time resolution (averaging period). The temporal coverage indicates the start and end dates between which wind fields have been produced. Some weekly or monthly fields may be missing although inside the indicated temporal coverage, due to the related scatterometer or satellite unavailibility or malfunction. The dataset is split onto two separate disks (or folder on the WOCE DVD) :

satellite scatterometer spatial resolution Temporal Resolution Temporal Coverage
ERS-1 AMI-Wind 1° x 1° week Aug 05 1991 to Jun 02 1996
month Aug 1991 to May 1996
ERS-2 AMI-Wind 1° x 1° week Mar 25 1996 to Jan 15 2001
month Apr 1996 to Dec 2000
satellite scatterometer spatial resolution Temporal Resolution Temporal Coverage
ADEOS NSCAT 1° x 1° week Sep 16 1996 to Jun 30 1997
month Oct 1996 to Jun 1997
QuikSCAT SeaWinds 0.5° x 0.5° week Jul 26 1999 to Jul 01 2002
month Aug 1999 to Jun 2002
  • Although available at CERSAT but not included in the WOCE dataset are the QuikSCAT daily wind fields and - starting Fall 2002 - merged multi-sensor daily wind fields (using ERS, NSCAT, QuikSCAT scatterometers and SSM/I radiometers). New weekly and monthly QuikSCAT fields are also routinely produced since this scatterometer is still active. To update your dataset with the latest available wind fields, refer to the update section.

satellite scatterometer spatial resolution Temporal Resolution Temporal Coverage
QuikSCAT SeaWinds 0.5° x 0.5° day Jul 20 1999 - ongoing
week Jul 26 1999 - ongoing
month Aug 1999 - ongoing
  • Also available at CERSAT but not included in the WOCE DVD is a monthly climatology computed from ERS-1 and ERS-2 monthly wind fields over ten years. Please refer to CERSAT web site for more details.
