LIS/OTD 2.5 Degree Low Resolution Annual Climatology Time Series

Gridded OTD+LIS combined product - 2.5 deg. daily flash rate climatology as daily time series

Combined OTD (Optical Transient Detector) + LIS (Lightning Imaging Sensor) total (interclouds+cloud to ground) flash production gridded to 2.5x2.5 lat/lon. is given as a daily climatology. The time span is 5 yrs of the satellite mission (OTD 4/95-3/00, LIS 1/98-12/02). The climatology is determined as the total number of flashes at a given location over the total viewing time of the sensor. In addition, the resulting flash production is weighted by the instrument detection efficiency. This product is similar to low resolution annual climatology but the values are smoothed in space and time giving better representation of the flash production climatology.
