HYCOM for the Hawaiian Islands Region

The Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) is implemented for the Hawaiian Islands region at various horizontal resolutions and domain sizes. The lateral open boundaries are either forced by output from the HYCOM Consortium's near real-time global ocean prediction system (at a resolution of 0.08 degree) or output from a regional HYCOM implementation that has a larger domain size and a coarser horizontal resolution (0.04 degree or finer). The vertical resolution of the regional HYCOM is the same as the global system (32 layers in all with 28 active layers in the Hawaiian Islands region). For the surface atmospheric forcing, either the NOGAPS or the output from a regional atmospheric system (WRF) is used. No data assimilation is included in the regional configurations at present. Original model layer variables are interpolated onto 20 z-levels before being put on the server.


The main Hawaiian Islands region (HAWb0.04):
Experiment 01.5 - with NOGAPS (0.5 degree) for surface forcing.

Experiment 01.2 - with WRF (0.16 degree) for surface forcing.
   This experiment is performed in the same way as experiment 01.5 except that the surface atmospheric forcing comes from the output of a regional atmospheric system, WRF, at a resolution of 18 Km (~ 0.16 degree).

Experiment 01.3 - with WRF (0.16 degree) for surface forcing.
   This experiment is the same as experiment 01.2 except that it is re-initialized every 10 days with the ocean state of the real-time HYCOM global prediction system. The initializations dates are June 23, July 3, 13, 23, August 2, 12, 22, September 1, 11, and so on.

Experiment 01.6 - with NOGAPS (0.5 degree) for surface forcing.
   This experiment is the same as experiment 01.5 except that it is re-initialized every 10 days with the ocean state of the real-time HYCOM global prediction system. The initializations dates are June 23, July 3, 13, 23, August 2, 12, 22, September 1, 11, and so on.

Experiment 01.7 - with WRF (0.056 degree) for surface forcing.
   This experiment is performed in the same way as experiment 01.5 except that the surface atmospheric forcing comes from the output of a regional atmospheric system, WRF, at a resolution of 6 Km (~ 0.056 degree), and that it is initialized with the ocean state of the latest global HYCOM reanalysis on a daily basis and integrated to two days ahead of the present time. The time series begins at 0Z, April 1, 2009 at 3-hourly intervals.
