APDRC serves model output for the Hawaiian Archipelago region from the
HYCOM Consortium's real-time global ocean prediction
system based on the Hybrid Coordinate ocean Model (HYCOM) and the Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (NCODA). The system runs
daily and produces a five day hindcast (analysis) and a five day forecast. Model output is extracted for the Hawaiian Archipelago
region in the original HYCOM format at the Center for Ocean Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) and downloaded to the APDRC daily.
Original model layer variables are interpolated onto 33 z-levels before being put on the server at the APDRC.
The vertical velocity is computed based on the algorithm by George Halliwell (Diagnosis of Kinematic Vertical Velocity in HYCOM) as coded in archv2data3z of the HYCOM post-processing package.
