Hadley Centre Global Sea Surface Temperature (HadSST) Analyses

HadISST is a monthly long-term global sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice analysis beginning in 1870 with one-degree resolution. In situ SST observations and satellite derived estimates at the sea surface are included in the analyses. SST measurements taken using the water bucket method have been corrected and used to determine the gridded fields from 1870 through 1941. When satellite data become available, in the early 1980's, they (SSMI for sea ice and AVHRR for SST) are used in conjunction with the observations to form a blended analysis. This high quality data covers over 130 years and is regularly extended to a current date.
